What are we teaching our children?

As someone who has been working to pay off credit card debt for the last 7 years, I am annoyed by Visa's current ad campaign, "life moves fast; you must have a visa card because writing checks slows down and angers everyone around you. And what are you thinking using cash?? no one in retail knows how to count out change, and they should not have to by goodness!!! "

Unlike, the clever mastercard "Priceless" campaign the visa campaign is about guilt trips, and those campaigns never sit well with me anyway. But my son now thinks we need a visa card because paying cash is just such a hassle on tv. and a friend's daughter comments about the lady who made everyone sad because she wrote a check. We have both had to explain to our children that chances are the people using their visa cards in the ads will be paying for their gardening supplies, newspapers and cups of coffee for the next 30 years.  Maybe its beneficial they hear it now, rather than learning it all the hard way like some of have.

I dont think my lessons are sticking as solidly as the one visa is drilling into our children, maybe I should put my comments to music, and dance around with an umbrella, and a cart full of flowers.

What commercials annoy you?

  1. Reminds of when my son wants something and says lets go the bank Mom. And, i had to explain I cant get money out the bank, unless I put money in. Of course, he looks puzzled and Mom says... I'm Broke Kiddo..

  2. I hate those commercials too! Especially because I think that cash is quicker than all forms of payment - even if credit cards are quicker then checks. What I hate are how credit card companies camp outside of college campus' where students that have NO money are given credit cards some how.I hate the tag body spray commercials. I think they degrade women and make men think that smelling good equates sex. The last thing I want is for my future son to think that smelling good is how to have women whisper cat calls at you.

  3. My brother has been giving the kids Walmart cards for quite a few years now at Birthday and Christmas and we do ok on the concept of there is x amount of money on this card and you can only spend so much than your card doesn't work.. but its like fighting a losing battle sometimes.

  5. I agree with you--although I do use my Visa debit card a lot. And I shouldn't. I shop at a lot of locally-owned, small businesses and the rates that Visa and MC charge to the stores can really hit their profit margin, which is why many of these places have minimum amounts you can charge. I cannot stand the Geico commercials. I'm not a fan of the gecko and the recent commercial where he says "they literally hand you an english muffin" and then just a bit later says "not really, that's just a dramatization" really annoys me. I can't stand when people misuse the word "literally".More annoying though are the cavemen commercials. I really hope that there isn't a sitcom being created from them. I really hate, hate, hate those commercials.
